A small training project.
The objective of this game was to try mixing the mechanics of Mario Kart, specifically the balloon mode, with the logic of a first person shooter.
In order to do this, I made a classical arsenal (basic shorts, explosives, melee weapons, etc...), in a local multiplayer system.
The twist being that each weapon only has a simple ammunition.
This means that the players have to constantly go back to the weapon boxes, in order to get a random weapon, that will be usable once, and so on.
During the tests, the results were pretty positives. The random weapon system makes for a more dynamic and chaotic game.
An aggressive player will have to flee once their weapons are consumed, whereas the chased one will be able to turn the tables later on.
In addition to this, the gameplay crystalizes around the weapon points, which gives a nice control on the level design for later.
Finally, this system allows to avoid some classical problems of competitive shooters. Notably the "camping" (a player not moving from a safe position that allows them to shoot the others), and the "snowball" (a player winning, and thus getting bonuses or hoarding the best weapons, and then winning even more), as nobody can keep using the same powerful weapon, or stay in one place.
This game is currently stopped.
The first result was nice for the tests that I wanted, and the game may be worked on more later, for a more polished version.
